Meaning – Someone who is lively and attractive, in a clean, fresh way

  • My sister has been travelling for almost 24 hours, and she’s still as fresh as a daisy.
  • We can’t look as fresh as a daisy without having to wash our hair constantly.

Couch Potato

Meaning – Spending too much time on the internet or watching TV

  • My uncle is such A couch potato! He often spends his Saturdays watching American football on TV.  
  • He’s turned into a real couch potato since he subscribed to the sports channel.

Meaning – A person who is lively, active and healthy

  • My 6 year old nephew is full of beans! He has more energy than three adults.
  • You seem full of beans this morning; you must have a good night’s rest.

Meaning – Someone who is untrustworthy

  • Hey, Sue, I think your neighbor is a bad egg. He has these scary looking guys in black leather hanging around his place all the time.
  • At first I trusted him, but soon I found he’s a bad egg.

Down To Earth

Meaning – Someone who is practical and realistic

  • My aunt Karen is so down to earth. She can figure out any difficult situation, and offer a good solution.
  • There are a few people in the world who are down to earth these days.

Party Pooper

Meaning – A person who is gloomy and having no fun at a social gathering

  • Listen, my friend, I’m so sorry to be a party pooper, but I have to study for my IELTS speaking exam tomorrow.
  • I hate to be a party pooper, but I am really tired.

Eager Beaver

Meaning – A person who is hardworking and enthusiastic

  • My colleague drives me crazy! She is such an eager beaverthat she always volunteers for overtime.
  • Don’t be such an eager beaver; we have plenty of time to complete the task.

Ball in Your Court

Meaning – It’s your decision or responsibility to do something now

  • Well, my friend, the ball’s in your court. I’ll wait for your decision.
  • I have filled out the Visa application and provided all the information they asked for; now the ball is in their courtand all I can do is wait.

Meaning – Give up.

  • Have I spent so much time on this project to throw in the towelnow?
  • His trainer told Rocky that he would throw in the towel if he did not start throwing punches.

Meaning – Start before all others.

Meaning – Have a burst of energy after tiring.

  • After having a coffee and a sandwich, he got his second wind, and finished painting the room.
  • He was going to stop working at 6:00 pm, but He got mysecond wind and just carried on until about 9:00 pm.

Meaning – Start too early.

  • I think I jumped the gunby buying my friends Jimmy and Sushi a gift. They just called off their engagement.

Meaning – Try your hardest.

  • This test question is really tough! I’ll give my best shot.
  • He knew, it was not going to be easy, but he was going to give his best shot.

Meaning – Ready and able

  • Our office receptionist is really on the ball when it comes to fielding calls from annoyed customers.
  • He couldn’t sleep well last night, so he is not on the ball

  • She has a sweet tooth; she always craves for ice-cream after her dinner.
