IELTS Test Format

Briefly, IELTS is a test of all four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. One takes the Listening, Reading and Writing tests all on the same day one after the other, with no breaks in between. However, for the Speaking test, one can book a slot online on one’s preferred date and time.

A candidate has to listen to four recordings and then answer the given questions. The recordings are of native English speakers and the duration of the test is 30 minutes. 10 more minutes are given to transfer the answer to separate answer sheet.

IELTS Reading Test

The IELTS Reading test requires the candidate to answer 40 questions and is designed to test the reading skills. One would have to read for gist, main ideas, and details, logical arguments, skimming, and figuring out the writers’ attitudes, opinions and intentions.

IELTS Writing Test

The IELTS writing test requires the candidate to complete two different tasks. For task-1, a candied is given 20 minutes and it requires to write a response on given chart or table in minimum 150 word. In task 2 answer should not be less than 250 words in 40 minutes.

IELTS Speaking

IELTS Speaking Test

The IELTS Speaking test assesses your spoken English skills. The test is recorded and conducted in three parts. The first part is introductory level.  It is followed by Cue card session and at last some follow-up questions related to the cue-cards are asked.

IELTS Score Scale​

In the IELTS test, a candidate’s English-language skills are measured against band scores. These band scores range from a band 0 to a band 9 with each band score corresponding to a level of English-language competence.

The test taker has a partial command of the language and copes with overall meaning in most situations, although they are likely to make many mistakes. They should be able to handle basic communication in their own field.

The test taker’s basic competence is limited to familiar situations. They frequently show problems in understanding and expression. They are not able to use complex language.
